I've been a seasons ticket holder with the Arts Club Theatre Company for years. The Arts Club is a cornerstone of Vancouver's vibrant arts scene, renowned for its commitment to producing high-quality theatre that resonates with audiences. Founded in 1958 as a private club for artists, musicians, and actors, the Arts Club Theatre Company has grown to become the largest urban not-for-profit theatre company in Western Canada.
A Rich History
The Arts Club Theatre Company was officially established in 1964 when it opened its first stage, a converted gospel hall on Seymour Street in Downtown Vancouver. The first production was Moss Hart's "Light Up the Sky," marking the beginning of a long and illustrious journey. Over the years, the Arts Club has been instrumental in launching the careers of many Canadian talents, including Michael J. Fox, Bruce Greenwood, and Brent Carver.
Under the leadership of Bill Millerd, who served as artistic director for over 45 years, the Arts Club expanded its reach and reputation. The company celebrated its 50th season in 2014 and produced its 600th production in 2017. In 2017, Ashlie Corcoran took over as artistic director, continuing the tradition of excellence and innovation.
Venues Today
Today, the Arts Club Theatre Company operates out of several venues, each offering a unique experience for theatre-goers:
- Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage: Located at the BMO Theatre Centre, this 650-seat venue is the largest in the Arts Club's repertoire. It hosts a wide range of productions, from contemporary comedies to classic dramas1.
- Granville Island Stage: Situated on Granville Island, this 440-seat venue is known for its intimate atmosphere and diverse programming. It has been a staple of the Arts Club since 19792.
- Newmont Stage: Also located at the BMO Theatre Centre, this 250-seat venue offers a more intimate setting for smaller productions and special events.
In addition to its main venues, the Arts Club also tours productions throughout British Columbia, bringing theatre to communities across the province.
Commitment to Community and Education
Beyond its productions, the Arts Club Theatre Company is dedicated to community engagement and education. The company offers a variety of educational programs, including student matinees, workshops, and outreach initiatives3. These programs aim to inspire and nurture the next generation of theatre artists and enthusiasts.
The Arts Club Theatre Company continues to be a beacon of creativity and cultural enrichment in Vancouver and beyond. With a rich history and a commitment to excellence, it remains a vital part of the city's artistic landscape. See their website: https://artsclub.com/
