Understanding the Scarcity Mindset

Time, money, and energy—these are the three resources people often feel they lack. Whether it's saying "I don’t have enough time," "I’m always broke," or "I’m too exhausted," the scarcity mindset around these resources is incredibly common. But what exactly is the scarcity mindset, and why does it hold us back?

The scarcity mindset stems from the belief that there simply isn’t enough of these critical resources to go around. It's a cycle of lack and limitation that keeps us from fully tapping into our potential. When you're constantly thinking, I don’t have enough, your brain focuses on the absence of resources rather than finding ways to create more. This mindset not only blocks creativity and productivity but also affects your decision-making, often leading to poor choices that perpetuate the cycle of scarcity.

This is not just about practical limitations; it’s also psychological. Take time, for instance—everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day, as famously noted by productivity expert Jim Rohn: “Either you run the day, or the day runs you.” However, when we believe we’re "out of time," we stress and scramble, losing focus on what matters most.

Money often works the same way. The thought “I never have enough money” can keep you stuck in survival mode, making reactive financial decisions instead of strategic, long-term ones. Energy is no different. When you constantly feel drained, it becomes easy to use that as an excuse to delay or avoid doing things that are essential to your growth.

The scarcity mindset around time, money, and energy is a trap, but recognizing it is the first step toward escaping it. Once you understand that these limitations are often self-imposed, you can begin shifting toward an abundance mindset—one that focuses on possibilities, solutions, and sustainable growth.
