Vancouver, BC - March 24, 2025 - Canada has officially called the next federal election, dissolving Parliament and setting the stage for a high-stakes race. With barely a month until voters head to the polls on April 28, the political landscape is shifting rapidly.
The Vancouver Connection to the Election
In a major development, former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson has announced his candidacy as the Liberal representative for Vancouver Fraserview–South Burnaby. Robertson accepted an invitation from Liberal Leader Mark Carney, who launched the election earlier in the day.
"We're facing unprecedented, urgent, complex challenges — and there's no one better prepared to lead us through them than Prime Minister Mark Carney," Robertson said in a statement.
Carney himself is running in the Ottawa-area riding of Nepean after launching his leadership campaign in Edmonton.
A Tight Race with Shifting Polls
Just months ago, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was favored for a majority. But since Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, the race has tightened. According to CBC's Poll Tracker, Carney’s Liberals now have a three-in-four chance of winning the most seats. They lead in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario, while the Conservatives dominate in Alberta, the Prairies, and still hold an edge in B.C.
Trump’s Tariffs and Canada-U.S. Relations
Economic uncertainty is adding tension to the campaign. The re-election of Donald Trump has led to sharp rhetoric from Carney, who criticized Trump's trade policies. The U.S. president recently imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum, prompting Canada to double its retaliatory tariffs. More tariffs are expected in early April, further straining relations.
Londoners (Ontario) who spoke to CBC News say they want the next prime minister to stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war and threats to Canada's sovereignty, curb the high cost of living, make trading easier among provinces and focus on the environment.
With only 36 days of campaigning—the shortest legally allowed—leaders will have to act fast. The battle for Canada’s future is on.
