Vancouver, BC - January 8, 2025 - The Burnaby-based company cellcentric is an exciting collaboration between Volvo Group and Daimler Trucks, two of Europe’s leading manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks. Established in 2021, this partnership aims to create and promote fuel cell systems specifically designed for trucks.

At the IAA Transportation event in Germany September 2024, cellcentric introduced its innovative 150-kW fuel cell system, designed to match the lifespan of traditional diesel engines during long journeys. At the first IAA TRANSPORTATION in 2022, 1,402 exhibitors from 42 countries and around 133,000 visitors from 72 countries attended. The next IAA TRANSPORTATION will take place in Hannover from September 15th to 20th, 2026.

A significant part of cellcentric's operation takes place in Burnaby, British Columbia, where a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility was recently launched. This facility employs 70 people and produces crucial components for cellcentric's hydrogen fuel cells. Burnaby is also home to Ballard Power Systems, a company with decades of experience in fuel cell technology. Many of the skilled professionals and advanced technologies used at cellcentric have strong ties to Ballard, which has played a pivotal role in developing fuel cell expertise in the region.

While cellcentric has not yet started commercial production, the new facility in Burnaby is poised to increase its production capabilities. According to Andrea Engelen, CEO of Cellcentric Canada, the team is excited about the possibilities that the new plant offers, contributing to their goal of creating cleaner solutions for heavy-duty transportation.

Cellcentric acknowledges that both fuel cell and battery technologies are essential to reducing emissions in logistics. Engelen points out that fuel cells can handle heavy loads more effectively than large battery systems, which can be expensive and occupy valuable cargo space.

As Cellcentric integrates its fuel cell stacks into heavy-duty trucks, they envision combining two of their fuel cell units to provide 300 kW of power, suitable for long-distance transport. This collaboration showcases the commitment shared by Canada and Germany to develop sustainable transportation solutions through joint efforts in hydrogen technology.

cellcentric will most likely be back at the world-famous Hannover Messe or Trade Fair" in March 31 to April 4th, 2025. Here is a link to #HM24 Exhibitor Spotlight: https://www.hannovermesse.de/en/news/news-articles/-hm24-exhibitor-spotlight-cellcentric
