In a bid to improve air quality, beautify neighborhoods, and combat the effects of climate change, the City of Delta has expanded its Planting Our Roots program — offering free trees to residents across South Delta.

This initiative allows homeowners to select from a curated list of native and ornamental trees, with delivery and planting handled by city crews. It's a simple but powerful way to grow Delta’s urban canopy.

“Each tree planted today is a legacy for tomorrow,” said Delta Mayor George Harvie. “This program helps build a greener, healthier community.”

Since launching in 2022, the city has distributed over 2,500 trees. The 2025 goal is to plant another 1,000 trees by fall.

Why it Matters

Urban trees don’t just look nice — they reduce heat, absorb stormwater, and remove pollutants from the air. According to the city, one mature tree can absorb up to 22 kg of CO₂ per year.

The program also strengthens Delta’s climate resilience and supports biodiversity by encouraging native species like Garry oak, Douglas fir, and Bigleaf maple.
