Jericho Pier, located in Vancouver's picturesque Jericho Beach Park just west of Kitsilano, has been a beloved landmark since its construction in 1942
Originally built to serve the local community and visitors, the pier has become a popular spot for fishing, crabbing, and leisurely strolls, offering stunning views of the North Shore Mountains and the city skyline
In recent years, Jericho Pier has faced significant challenges. In November 2021 and January 2022, the pier was severely damaged by two powerful windstorms, with the latter coinciding with a king tide
These storms left the pier battered and unsafe, leading to its closure
The damage was so extensive that the Vancouver Park Board considered demolishing the structure
However, in September 2023, the Park Board voted to proceed with a "like-for-like" repair of the pier, estimated to cost $1.7 million
This decision was made despite recommendations to dismantle the pier due to ongoing repair costs and the risks posed by future extreme weather events
The repair work, which began in December 2024, is expected to be completed by late 2025
Once repaired, Jericho Pier will continue to serve as a cherished recreational space for the public. It will provide an accessible dock for sailors with disabilities and remain a favorite spot for fishing, crabbing, and enjoying the scenic beauty of Vancouver
The pier's restoration ensures that it will remain a vital part of the community, preserving its historical significance and recreational value for future generations.
