Vancouver, BC - March 31, 2025 - The Vancouver Civic Theatres is excited to unveil the 2024/25 National Geographic Live Speaker Series, featuring the compelling presentation, The Untold Story of Sharks, by the renowned Dr. Jess Cramp. Sharks, masters of the seas since before the age of dinosaurs, encompass over 500 unique species. Despite their long existence, our understanding of their lives and the impact of human activity on their populations remains limited.
In this illuminating session, held April 2, 2025 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, Dr. Cramp utilizes the extensive resources of National Geographic to shed light on the pioneering contributions of 20th-century women in shark research and storytelling. Her journey takes audiences beneath the stunning waters of the South Pacific, showcasing her latest conservation efforts and groundbreaking research initiatives aimed at preserving these magnificent creatures.
Dr. Jess Cramp is a leading voice in shark conservation, particularly known for founding Sharks Pacific, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental research and community engagement throughout the Pacific Islands. Her grassroots campaign led to the establishment of the Cook Islands Shark Sanctuary in 2012, an expansive region of over 770,000 square miles devoted to protecting shark habitats.
My adventures in scuba diving have deepened my appreciation for these incredible animals. During my five years of living in Australia, I was able to explore the vibrant underwater worlds of the beaches around Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef, and the stunning Jervis Bay. While more than 400 species of sharks are found worldwide today, there are 170 of them in Australian seas. In the Sydney Harbour, I regularly saw Port Jackson sharks, known as gentle giants, zebra sharks, another brand of harmless reef-dwellers charming in appearance and nature as well as the tasselled wobbegong, that wears a patterned suit that blends in with the reef floor.
As we learn more about sharks, it’s essential to remember that not all species are dangerous; many play pivotal roles in their ecosystems. They help maintain the balance of marine life, influencing the health of ocean environments. Supporting shark conservation is vital, as their survival directly affects the well-being of our oceans. It is important to advocate for these magnificent creatures, educate ourselves and others about their importance, and participate in local conservation efforts. Together, we can ensure that these remarkable beings thrive for generations to come.
