Vancouver, BC - March 30, 2025 - In 2003, I embarked on a whimsical adventure: tackling the Vancouver Sun Run, Canada's largest 10K road race, without a shred of training. Armed with enthusiasm and a pair of sneakers, I joined thousands at the starting line on Georgia Street, where participants were organized into colour-coded corrals marked by festive balloon archways, indicating expected finish times. Naturally, I found myself in the "leisurely stroll" section.

As the race commenced, my friend and I set off with gusto. However, upon reaching English Bay, I spotted a "Finish" sign. Tempted by the prospect of an early exit and perhaps a celebratory ice cream, I soon realized this was merely a mirage for those reconsidering their life choices mid-race. Determined, I pressed on.

By the halfway mark, exhaustion set in. My legs felt like blocks of heavy wood, and I questioned my life decisions. Surrounding me were inspiring individuals: participants in wheelchairs, seniors with ski poles, and others overcoming their own challenges. They even had several individuals being pushed along in their hospital beds from nearby St. Paul's! Their perseverance fuelled my own.

Crossing the finish line felt like an epic victory against the forces of nature, followed closely by the realization that I had summoned enough soreness to last a lifetime. For the next three days, I waddled around like a penguin trying to navigate an icy tundra, and let’s just say, my newfound respect for training could fill an entire self-help book. But amid the agony, there was a swell of pride—I had conquered the Sun Run! Who knew that suffering could truly be a badge of honor?
