Vancouver, BC - March 7th, 2025 - The Orpheum Theatre, a cornerstone of Vancouver's cultural landscape, has a rich history that reflects the city's evolving artistic scene.
Historical Roots: From Vaudeville to Cinema
Designed by Scottish architect B. Marcus Priteca, the Orpheum opened its doors on November 7, 1927, originally serving as a vaudeville theatre. Located on Granville Street near Smithe Street in downtown Vancouver, it was the largest theatre in Canada at the time, boasting a seating capacity of approximately 3,000. As vaudeville's popularity waned in the early 1930s, the Orpheum transitioned into a movie palace under the ownership of Famous Players, hosting both cinematic screenings and occasional live performances.
Preservation and Renaissance
In 1973, plans to convert the Orpheum into a multiplex cinema prompted a public outcry. The "Save the Orpheum" campaign, supported by notable figures like entertainer Jack Benny, led to the City of Vancouver purchasing the theatre in 1974. After extensive renovations, the Orpheum reopened on April 2, 1977, as the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO).
Cultural Significance and Future Endeavors
Beyond the VSO, the Orpheum has hosted a myriad of events, including performances by internationally acclaimed artists. One of the most notable was Louis Armstrong, who graced its stage during its tenure as a premier concert venue. Last December, fans were urged to get into the holiday spirit as the Vancouver Bach Choir’s presented Handel’s Messiah, featuring four brilliant soloists and members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. This concert has become a tradition for at least over 25 years.
Looking ahead, the Orpheum continues to be a vibrant hub for the arts. In July 2025, it is set to welcome Paul Simon as part of his "A Quiet Celebration" tour, marking his return to the stage after a seven-year hiatus. And an "AQUA 2025 Canada Tour" will be coming on September 5th, 2025.
