History of the Upper Kitsilano Residents Association (UKRA)

The Upper Kitsilano Residents Association (UKRA), a non-profit, non-partisan organization, was established in 1995 to protect the character and livability of the Upper Kitsilano neighborhood, a historically working-class area south of Broadway that includes homeowners, renters, and university students.

The association has been active for over two decades, focusing on preserving the unique mix of modest homes, including the famous Kitsilano bungalows, as a unique, livable neighbourhood in order to maintain the neighborhood's distinctive look and feel.

UKRA is also a member of the Coalition of Vancouver Neighbourhoods, and works closely with sister organizations, the West Kitsilano and the West Point Grey Residents Associations.

Influence Today

Today, UKRA continues to play a significant role in the community by:

  1. Advocating for Housing Preservation: UKRA works to protect existing affordable housing and find gentle ways to densify the neighborhood without compromising its character.
  2. Community Engagement: The association actively involves residents in discussions about zoning changes, traffic, pedestrian crossings, and other local issues.
  3. Opposing Overdevelopment: UKRA has been vocal against large-scale developments like the Broadway Plan, which proposes high-density housing along the Broadway Corridor. They advocate for more balanced and community-friendly development approaches.

UKRA's efforts ensure that the voices of Upper Kitsilano residents are heard in city planning decisions, helping to maintain the neighborhood's livability and charm.
