Part one of our five part series on Unconventional Funding

When it comes to film financing, filmmakers are increasingly turning to unconventional methods to bring their projects to life. Two such methods, crowdfunding platforms and product placement deals, have proven effective for independent filmmakers looking to secure production funding in innovative ways.

Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer filmmakers a unique way to connect directly with their audience early in the process. By offering perks such as exclusive behind-the-scenes access, merchandise, or even input on creative decisions, filmmakers can build a loyal base of supporters who are invested in the film's success. This method also allows filmmakers to gauge public interest and generate buzz before the film is even made. Films like Veronica Mars and The Babadook famously used this approach to raise significant funds from eager fans.

Similarly, product placement deals can be a win-win for filmmakers and brands. Companies provide financial backing in exchange for featuring their products within the film. While this method is often associated with bigger productions, independent filmmakers can also benefit by partnering with smaller, local brands that align with the film's content or audience.

These two funding strategies offer independent filmmakers innovative ways to generate financial support while building an engaged audience. Crowdfunding and product placement not only help raise production funds but also create marketing opportunities that can enhance a film’s success.
