Vancouver, BC - February 24, 2025 - Hastings Mill Park Museum, nestled in the vibrant area of Kitsilano, Vancouver, is a historic site that provides a fascinating insight into the city's early development. Originally founded as a sawmill in 1865 by Captain Edward Stamp, Hastings Mill was the first commercial operation around which the settlement that eventually became Vancouver was built. The mill operated until its closure in 1928, playing a critical role in the lumber industry that fueled the region's growth.
In 1930, the store building of the Hastings Mill was relocated to its current site at the foot of Alma Street, within present-day Hastings Mill Park. The Old Hastings Mill Store Museum was officially opened in 1932, showcasing a variety of artifacts that highlight Vancouver's history and the significant contributions of First Nations cultures. Operated by the Native Daughters of British Columbia, the museum houses relics from early settlers and exhibits related to First Nations art and history.
The building itself is Vancouver's oldest surviving structure, notable for having withstood the Great Vancouver Fire of 1886, after which it served as a hospital and morgue for the fire's victims. Today, Hastings Mill Museum continues to serve as an educational hub for both residents and visitors, offering guided tours and community events that highlight the area's rich heritage.
With its unique location in Kitsilano, the museum not only preserves the legacy of the early lumber industry but also presents a social history of life in the burgeoning community. As Vancouver evolves, Hastings Mill Museum stands as a testament to the city’s roots, inviting future generations to explore its storied past.
