Vancouver, BC - January 29, 2025 - Vancouver residents will head to the polls on April 5, 2025, for a by-election to fill two vacant City Council seats. These vacancies follow the resignations of Christine Boyle and Adriane Carr. Boyle, who was elected in 2018 as part of OneCity Vancouver, stepped down after winning a seat in the BC Legislature for the BC NDP in the Vancouver-Little Mountain riding. Carr, a long-serving councillor and former leader of the Green Party of British Columbia, retired from city politics after many years of public service.
Several candidates and political groups have announced their participation in the by-election. TEAM for a Livable Vancouver, founded by former councillor Colleen Hardwick, will be nominating two candidates. The party was established to focus on neighborhood engagement and sustainable urban planning. Meanwhile, OneCity Vancouver has put forward Lucy Maloney, a well-known cycling advocate, as a candidate. Maloney has worked extensively on improving transportation infrastructure in the city.
As the by-election approaches, it brings back memories from Vancouver’s 2018 municipal race. That year, one piece of trivia is that independent candidate Elke Porter unsuccessfully ran for council with a campaign focused on affordability and cultural events, including the idea of a city-wide Oktoberfest. Her slogan was, "clean, green with an affordable scene." Another bit of trivia from that election was the presence of candidates Christine Boyle, Pete Fry, and Graham Cook—resulting in the lighthearted "Boyle, Fry, and Cook" combination.
The nomination period for the by-election remains open until February 28, 2025, with more candidates expected to enter the race. Advance voting is scheduled for March 26 and April 1, with mail-in ballots available starting March 8. Vancouver residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in the upcoming election.
