Vancouver, BC - March 28, 2025 - The Vancouver Convention Centre, a premier event facility in British Columbia, expanded significantly with the opening of its West Building in April 2009. This expansion tripled the centre's size, enhancing its capacity to host a diverse range of events.
Purpose and Design
The West Building was constructed to accommodate the growing demand for convention space in Vancouver, positioning the city as a top destination for international meetings. Designed collaboratively by LMN Architects, Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership, and DA Architects & Planners, the facility seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape. Its most notable feature is the six-acre "living roof," the largest in Canada, which hosts 400,000 indigenous plants and four colonies of honeybees.
Location and Facilities
Situated on the downtown waterfront at 1055 Canada Place, the West Building offers over 466,500 square feet of flexible meeting, exhibition, and ballroom space. Its floor-to-ceiling windows provide breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, enhancing the experience for attendees.
Tunnel Connection Between East and West Buildings
The Vancouver Convention Centre comprises two main sections: the East Building, located at Canada Place, and the West Building, situated along the waterfront. These buildings are connected by an underground tunnel, facilitating seamless movement between the two sections. This tunnel is accessible via the Harbour Concourse, which links to the West Building, and includes an underground connector leading to the food court and the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel.
Sustainability and Challenges
Achieving double LEED Platinum certification, the Vancouver Convention Centre is recognized for its environmental sustainability. Features such as the living roof, seawater heating and cooling systems, and an on-site water treatment plant underscore its commitment to eco-friendly operations.
Events Hosted
The convention centre hosts a wide array of events, including international conferences, trade shows, and cultural gatherings. Notably, it served as the International Broadcast Centre during the 2010 Winter Olympics and has been the venue for the annual TED Conference since 2014.
Vancouver International Wine Festival 2025
The Vancouver International Wine Festival, Canada's premier wine show, took place from February 22 to March 2, 2025. The festival featured approximately 18,000 admissions and hosted 120 participating wineries from 15 countries. The main events, including the International Festival Tastings, were held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building from February 26 to March 2.
Hy-fcell Canada 2025
Hy-fcell Canada 2025, an international expo and conference focusing on hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, is scheduled for June 3 to 5, 2025, at the Vancouver Convention Centre East Building. The event will feature a two-day interactive conference program and international exhibition on June 4 and 5, preceded by a full day of technology tours on June 3.
