A Rich Historical Background
Now called the HI Vancouver Jericho Beach Youth Hostel, this historical building is located at 1515 Discovery Street in the West Point Grey area of Vancouver and only a few minutes drive from Kitsilano. This building has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century.
Originally built as air force barracks in 1934, the site was part of the Jericho Beach Air Station, a military base established in 1920. The base played a significant role during World War II, serving as a training and defense site for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). After the war, the federal government decommissioned the base, and the land was leased to the City of Vancouver for use as parklands.
The old military barracks found new life in the 1960s when they became a haven for the counterculture movement. Young hippies, draft dodgers, and other members of the counterculture community occupied the barracks, renaming it "Cool-Aid." Despite the lack of amenities, the site became a vibrant community until it was evacuated by police in 1970.
In the same year, the Canadian Youth Hostels Association (now known as HI Canada) took over the property, transforming it into a youth hostel. This initiative was part of a federal program to provide affordable accommodation for young travelers.
