Vancouver, BC - March 2, 2025 - Vancouver’s municipal by-election to fill two vacant City Council seats is set for Saturday, April 5, 2025. Voting will occur from 8 AM to 8 PM at various locations across the city, with advance voting available on March 26 and April 1 at City Hall. Mail-in ballots can be requested starting March 3.

The by-election follows the resignations of OneCity Councillor Christine Boyle, elected as an MLA for Vancouver-Little Mountain in fall 2024, and Green Councillor Adriane Carr, who stepped down in January 2025.

Thirteen candidates are currently in the running, as announced by officials on February 28, though the list may shift until March 7, the deadline for challenges and withdrawals. Some of the candidates—such as Colleen Hardwick, who served as a Vancouver City Councillor from 2018 to 2022 and ran for mayor in 2022, or Karin Litzcke, who ran for Vancouver School Board in 2022 and for MLA in Vancouver-Mount Pleasant in 2023, have run before. Rollergirl even ran for mayor in 2018, for the Parks Board in 2022 and is now back to try to get a seat on the Vancouver City Council in 2025.

The candidates, in alphabetical order, are: Theodore Abbott (TEAM), Jeanifer Decena (Independent), Guy Dubé (Independent), Colleen Hardwick (TEAM), Ralph Kaisers (ABC Vancouver), Charles Ling (Independent), Karin Litzcke (Independent), Lucy Maloney (OneCity), Gerry McGuire (Independent), Sean Orr (COPE), Annette Reilly (Green), Rollergirl (Independent), and Jaime Stein (ABC Vancouver). A random draw on March 7, streamed live from the council chamber, will determine ballot order.

Eligible voters—Canadian citizens aged 18 or older by election day, B.C. residents for at least six months, and either Vancouver residents or property owners—can shape the city’s future in this $2 million by-election, the 18th in Vancouver’s 138-year history. With a mix of independents, party-backed hopefuls, and notable figures like former councillor Colleen Hardwick, the race is heating up. Vancouverites, get ready to vote on April 5!
